Do You Need a Surface or Mortise Magnetic Lock?

A surface-mounted glass door magnetic lock isn’t recessed into the door. Instead, it attaches to the structure or frame above it, making installation easier when a suitable mounting surface is already present in the opening.

A recessed or mortise lock has a cleaner appearance, as it sits within a compatible rail, frame, or header. However, the space should exist or be designed into the opening. A lock body cannot simply be recessed into a solid sheet of frameless glass.

What Bracket Do You Need for a Glass Door Magnetic Lock?

To choose the right bracket, look at where the armature and magnet can be safely supported. Z and L brackets can be used to adapt magnetic locks to varying door and frame arrangements. Doing this becomes even more important when the process involves tempered glass. You should not cut or drill the glass in the field, but instead use mounting hardware designed for the glass door.

How Do You Install an Electromagnetic Lock for Glass Door Use?

The first step is to inspect the glass door and the structure around it. There must be a suitable structural location for the magnet, plus the right mounting hardware or bracket for the armature.

Once you’ve inspected it, position the armature and magnet in a way that their faces meet squarely when the door closes. It’s important to get the alignment right here because the armature requires flat contact with the magnet. Install the armature according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Where the design uses a floating armature, don’t overtighten it in a way that prevents the plate from seating correctly against the magnet.

Next, connect the lock to the specified access-control system and power supply following the manufacturer’s wiring instructions. Voltage should be checked at the lock, especially where long cable runs can lead to a voltage drop.

The final step is to test the whole setup before the door is put into service. Check whether it closes properly and whether the magnet holds and releases correctly. Additionally, check whether removing power releases the fail-safe lock.
